£195K secured to support victims affected by prisoner releases

Bedfordshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner John Tizard has secured £195,000 from the Ministry of Justice to strengthen support for victims affected by the early release of prisoners.

The funding will be used to enhance existing support and advocacy services across Bedfordshire, including additional help from some organisations to ensure victims can access safeguarding and support measures where needed.

Local support for people affected by the early release scheme will be coordinated through Bedfordshire Victims Support, which is already funded by the PCC and Ministry of Justice. The organisation will work closely with the Probation Service as prisoners are released.

Mr Tizard said the additional funding would help ensure victims are not overlooked as the government continues its early release programme.

“I am pleased that the government has recognised that some victims of crimes committed by those prisoners on the early release scheme will want support and reassurance. This funding allows us to build on and extend our existing support services in Bedfordshire, some of which already support victims when prisoners are released,” he said.

“Victims must remain at the heart of our criminal justice system. Whilst I acknowledge the pressures facing the prison system and support the government’s programme of early release where appropriate, I want victims to feel safe, supported and confident that their concerns are being taken seriously.”

The PCC is encouraging anyone who feels concerned, vulnerable or affected by the changes to come forward and seek support.

Victims can contact Victim Support’s dedicated Offender Release Helpline on 0808 168 9280 for emotional and practical support, information about the changes and guidance on accessing further help.

Support can also be accessed directly through Bedfordshire Victim Care Services, or through referrals from the Victim Support Helpline or Bedfordshire Police.
