Drivers are being warned to expect disruption from today as work gets under way on a 16-week project to improve safety and traffic flow at one of Luton’s busiest roundabouts.
The works at the Hatters Way and Chaul End Lane roundabout are aimed at making it safer for pedestrians and cyclists while improving vehicle movements through the busy junction.
The project will introduce a dedicated left-turn lane from Hatters Way into Chaul End Lane, install new signal-controlled pedestrian crossings on Hatters Way and Dallow Road, and replace redundant cycle lanes with a shared pedestrian and cycle path on the western side of the roundabout.
Changes will also be made to the bus lay-by on Dallow Road.
Traffic management measures are now in place and motorists are being advised to allow extra time for their journeys while the work is carried out. Overnight road closures from 8pm until 5am, Monday to Friday, will also take place during the first week of the project.
Luton Council says the improvements form part of its wider ambition to encourage more walking, cycling and sustainable travel, while making the junction safer for everyone who uses it.
Councillor Javeria Hussain, portfolio holder for Public Realm and Sustainable Transport, said: “This scheme will deliver important improvements at one of Luton’s busiest junctions, making it safer and easier for pedestrians and cyclists and, also, helping traffic move more efficiently.
“I would like to thank everyone who took the time to share their views ahead of these works starting. A number of common themes emerged and the valuable insight we have received will help inform our longer-term planning for the area.”
She acknowledged the work would cause disruption while it is carried out.
“There will inevitably be some disruption while these improvements are carried out. Our highways team will be working hard to keep that disruption to a minimum wherever possible, but I would encourage motorists to plan ahead and allow extra time for their journeys while the works take place.”
The council says the scheme supports its Luton 2040 vision by improving road safety, encouraging active travel and helping create a greener and more sustainable town.
