Luton’s five flagship parks retain prestigious Green Flag status

Five of Luton’s best-loved parks have once again been recognised among the country’s finest after retaining their prestigious Green Flag Awards.

The Green Flag Award is regarded as the benchmark for excellence in park management across the UK and internationally, recognising green spaces that are safe, welcoming, environmentally well managed and support the needs of their local communities.

The international quality mark, managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, is celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2026.

Luton’s five Green Flag parks – Brantwood Park, Memorial Park, People’s Park, Stockwood Park, and Wardown Park – have all successfully met the standards required to keep the award for another year.

Luton Council said the recognition reflects continued investment in the town’s parks and public spaces, with millions of pounds being spent on improvements as part of its wider plans to make the town cleaner and safer.

Recent projects have included major upgrades at Wigmore Valley Park, where a new skatepark, children’s play area, catering kiosk and improved accessibility features have been introduced.

Councillor Tahmina Saleem, Leader of Luton Council, said: “Retaining Green Flag status for all five parks is a fantastic achievement and something everyone in Luton can be proud of. Our parks and green spaces are valued by residents all year round, providing places to relax, exercise, play and spend time with family and friends.

“This achievement also reflects the council’s ‘Getting It Done’ priorities, with millions of pounds being invested to make Luton cleaner and safer, including improvements to parks, play areas and public spaces, so residents can continue to enjoy high-quality green spaces for years to come.”

Councillor Javeria Hussain, Portfolio Holder for Parks and Open Spaces, added: “I’m delighted that our parks and green spaces have once again achieved five Green Flag Awards. I’d like to thank our parks teams and volunteers for the care, dedication and pride they show every day in maintaining these much-loved spaces for our communities.
