Luton Council has approved plans for a £400 million redevelopment of the former Vauxhall van plant, paving the way for thousands of new jobs on one of the town’s most historic employment sites.
Councillors have given the go-ahead for Goodman to transform the Kimpton Road site into a major commercial and industrial park, known as Goodman Luton Gateway, with construction expected to begin next year.
The redevelopment is expected to become one of the largest commercial investments in the town for decades, creating around 2,400 direct jobs and attracting businesses in manufacturing, engineering, digital infrastructure and advanced logistics.
The decision marks another major milestone in the future of the site, which was home to Vauxhall’s van factory for more than a century before production ended in 2025, bringing an end to one of Luton’s most significant industrial eras.
Demolition of the former factory buildings began in May and, while further planning applications will be needed for the detailed design of individual buildings, the approval establishes the principle of the redevelopment. The first businesses are expected to move onto the site from 2028.

Councillor Basit Mahmood, Luton Council’s portfolio holder for Regeneration and Inclusive Growth, described the decision as another major step in securing the future of a site that has played a central role in the town’s history.
He said: “The approval of this planning application is another major milestone in bringing this strategically important site back into use and securing its long-term future.
“The former Vauxhall plant has played an important role in Luton’s history for generations, so it is encouraging to see these plans move forward so quickly to deliver a new future for the site.
“Goodman’s investment will help attract new businesses, support thousands of jobs and strengthen Luton’s economy for years to come. It also demonstrates the confidence investors have in our town and our ambitious vision for sustainable and inclusive economic growth.”
The proposals were developed in partnership with Luton Council and informed by public consultation with residents, businesses and community organisations.
The redevelopment is intended to support the council’s Economic Growth Strategy and its Luton 2040 vision, with the aim of attracting high-value employers and creating long-term employment opportunities for local people.
