Luton Town striker Elijah Adebayo could be sidelined for most of next season after undergoing surgery on a serious knee suffered during last weekend’s 1-1 draw with Leeds United.

Scans confirmed that the 27-year-old sustained anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) damage and he’s now undergone surgery before beginning a lengthy period of rehabilitation, and it is understood that could be between nine and 12 months.

The forward, who has made 41 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring five goals, was forced off early in the second half at Kenilworth Road on Saturday and manager Matt Bloomfield admitted the news is a huge blow for both the player and the club.

“I’m so disappointed for Eli,” Bloomfield told the club’s website. “He’s been working incredibly hard recently in training and I think we were beginning to see the best of him again. He was growing in confidence and really helping us with the courage he was showing.

“I was proud of the way he was playing and I thought against Leeds on Saturday he was unplayable at times. He helped create the goal and was leading the line with Carlton [Morris] brilliantly.

“We are so disappointed, first and foremost for him, and also for us, as a management team and as a football club, because he’s been a massive player for us and we are going to miss him a lot.

“But I know he’ll work incredibly hard to get himself back, with the support of everyone at the club, and we’ll look forward to having him back as and when he’s ready.”

Adebayo posted an Instagram photo of himself in a hospital bed after his surgery and said: “Hi Hatters, I am devastated to be writing this at such a crucial part of our season.

“Unfortunately, I’ve picked up an injury that will keep me out for the foreseeable future. It’s never easy facing setbacks, but I’m trusting in gode’s plan and although things may not be logical or fair, when god is erecting the events of our lives, we are force to trust the process.

“I’ll be working tireless on my recovery and can’t wait to return strong. For the time being, I’ll be supporting the boys from the sidelines.

“Thank you to my team, the staff and our fans for your support. The love you show means everything.

“With faith, I know I’ll be back soon. Love, Magic Man.”
