Teden Mengi will be missing for months after going under the knife to fix a knee injury suffered in training, Luton boss Rob Edwards has revealed, while there are issue with Shandon Baptiste and Amari’i Bell too.
Mengi and Baptiste were missing from the line-up as Town drew 1-1 with Swansea, after the manager had teased in his pre-match press conference a couple of “freakish” injuries.
The midfielder has damaged his calf, with the extent of that injury still to be determined, but Amari’i Bell limped out of the Championship clash, with Edwards fearing the defender has damaged his hamstring.
But Mengi’s meniscus injury is the third player in two seasons to have suffered innocuous but serious knee problems after Jacob Brown and Marvelous Nakamba both missed much of last term.
Explaining the incident, Edwards said: “Teden’s was a real sort of freak one. He’s hurt his knee just passing the ball. Unfortunately, he’s had an operation this morning, so he’s going to be out for a number of months now, so of course we wish him well.
“It’s incredibly frustrating at the moment. Just another blow when we’re on the ropes and we took one during a game with Amari’i has well. (It’s a) difficult, difficult period, but we keep fighting. I know it’s a challenge, and it’s an opportunity for the next person.
“Shandon felt his calf after the Norwich game, and felt it more again on Tuesday. So, he has done something to his calf. So we’ll have more details as we go, in length of time. But he has he has done something to his calf but he felt in the game last week.”
