Luton Town winger Ethon Archer has joined Port Vale on loan until the end of the season as he looks to gain regular first-team football in League One.
The 23-year-old signed for the Hatters from Cheltenham Town during the summer transfer window but remained with the League Two club on loan until the start of January. Archer made 28 appearances for the Robins this season, scoring three times, before returning to Kenilworth Road earlier this month.
Archer made his Luton debut as a substitute in last week’s Vertu Trophy defeat to Swindon. Under EFL regulations, that appearance does not prevent him from representing a third club in the same season, allowing the move to Vale Park to be completed.
Hatters boss Jack Wilshere told the BBC after Saturday 2-2 draw with Lincoln: “Archer will look to go out on loan because I think you get a better Ethon Archer back in the summer, after he’s played more games, which he probably might struggle to get here.”
Vale boss Jon Brady told the Valiants’ website: “We’re delighted to welcome Ethon into the group for the second half of the season. He’s an exciting young player who fits the profile of what we’re looking for here at Vale Park, and someone who we’re confident can make an impact for us. We’re all looking forward to working with him.”
The winger has taken a varied route through the non-league and lower-league game, having previously featured for Whyteleafe, Sutton Common Rovers, Bedfont Sports, Raynes Park Vale, Three Bridges, Welling United and Torquay United before his move to Cheltenham.
He now steps up a division with Port Vale, who are battling to avoid an immediate return to League Two. The Staffordshire club are under new management following the appointment of former Northampton Town boss Brady and will hope Archer can provide added attacking impetus during the run-in.
