Albert Sambi Lokonga has expressed a deep affection for Luton Town, describing his time at Kenilworth Road as one of the best periods of his life.

The Belgian midfielder, who spent the 2023–24 season on loan from Arsenal, became a fan favourite despite the club’s relegation from the Premier League.

“I had one of the best times of my life in Luton, because of the manager, the group we had, the staff, the stadium and I think the fans we had were amazing. Luton is a club that will stay in my heart forever,” Lokonga told the Evening Standard.

Lokonga’s loan spell was marked by resilience and commitment. After suffering a hamstring injury early in the season, he chose to remain at Luton for treatment rather than returning to Arsenal, demonstrating his dedication to the club.

Upon his return to fitness, Lokonga played a pivotal role in Luton’s midfield, forming a strong partnership with Ross Barkley. Then manager Rob Edwards praised Lokonga’s work ethic and tactical awareness, highlighting his importance in the team’s efforts to adapt to the Premier League.

Lokona remains in touch with the former Hatters boss and he said of Edwards: “I am just in love with him.”

Despite Luton’s relegation, Lokonga’s performances with Luton did not go unnoticed and he then joined Sevilla on a season-long loan, and though Arsenal have taken the option to extend his deal by another year, the Belgian is now hoping for a period of stability after three loans in two-and-a-half years.

Despite his love for Luton, there won’t be a reunion with the Hatters due to their relegation to League One and when the transfer window opens on Sunday June 1, Town will be shopping in a very different market to the heady days of their time in the Premier League.
