Luton Town have confirmed defender Christ Makosso has completed a permanent transfer to French side Auxerre, but revealed that the paperwork for the deal was not finalised when the Ligue 1 club announced the transfer.
The Hatters said the transfer was not completed, with all the necessary paperwork finalised, until almost an hour and a half after Auxerre had announced the move on their social media channels
A post by Auxerre appeared on their page at 5:15pm, but Luton confirmed the deal had only been completed “in the last few minutes” prior to them posting on social media at 6:41pm.
Writing on his Instagram page, Makosso said: “Each chapter has its history, and today it’s time for me to close this one with great gratitude.
“I would like sincerely to say thanks to CEO Gary Sweet, the management, all the people who contributed to my arrival at the club, the coaches, the entire staff, the people who work every day in the shadows, my teammates and supporters. Thank you for your trust, support and all the moments we shared. Wearing this jersey was a real honour, and I will keep very beautiful memories of this adventure. I leave Luton Town with great respect and gratitude, wishing the club and all the people who are part of it a lot of success for the future.”
Makosso leaves Kenilworth Road less than two years after arriving from Belgian side RWDM on New Year’s Eve in 2024.
The DR Congo international made 28 appearances for Town during the second half of the 2024/25 campaign and the first half of last season before joining Oxford United on loan in January with an option to buy.
While at Luton, the defender was dropped from the squad by former boss Matt Bloomfield after he was late for a team meeting before their defeat to Lincoln in September 2025. But the manager, who was sacked the following month, took over at Oxford where he signed Makosso on loan, dropping him from the U’s squad in March for again missing a team meeting before a clash with West Bromwich Albion.
He featured seven times for the U’s during the second half of the season, but was unable to prevent their relegation from the Championship and United did not take up the option to make his stay permanent
The 22-year-old had been widely expected to leave Luton this summer, with reports last month linking him to Auxerre.
In a brief statement confirming the transfer, the Hatters said: “While the transfer to Auxerre has been on and off for a few weeks, the Ligue 1 club decided to drop the news of the deal before paperwork was officially signed off.”
The club added: “Now it has been, we say a heartfelt merci beaucoup to Christ, who quickly endeared himself to Hatters fans in his short time at Kenilworth Road, and wish him every success for his future career.”
Luton did not disclose the transfer fee. However, reports in recent weeks suggested the deal could eventually be worth around £2million including add-ons. Some reports today from France claim that the deal could be worth as much as £2.7 euros (approximately £2.3million).
