Luton Town have been drawn away to Luke Berry’s former club Cambridge United away in FA Cup fourth round after beating Harrogate 4-0 this afternoon.
The midfielder scored in the third round win, in his first appearance since getting injured in October, and he’ll now have the chance to play against the club that Town signed him from 2017. That’s after Cambridge pulled off a giant-killing yesterday to beat Premier League Newcastle United.
After netting in today’s victory, Berry said: “I would like good cup run. I’ve never really had a real good cup run, so it’ll be good just to keep getting through and then, hopefully, win it. You never know. That would be nice, wouldn’t it?”
Town’s last tussle with the U’s came in 2018 in League Two, when the two sides played out a draw at the Abbey Stadium. Earlier that season, the Hatters had thumped United 7-0 at Kenilworth Road on their way to promotion. On both occasions Berry was in the Luton line-up, following his move from Cambridge.
Talking of Berry’s strike against Harrogate, boss Nathan Jones said: “He’s been doing it for eight years. That’s why we bought him and why we spent a lot of money on him in League Two, because he was the best goalscoring midfield player in the lower divisions. We signed him and he continued that.”
Luton and Cambridge had quite a rivalry in the the Conference and in the lower leagues, where they have played each other 23 times since 2009, including their only two clashes in the FA Cup, both on Cambridge’s patch. Town beat them 2-0 back in October 2012, but United won 2-1 in 2015.
But, overall, Luton have a better record than Cambridge, with 15 wins to United’s seven in all competition, while they have only ever lost three times on the road against the U’s.
Kal Naismith also scored against Harrogate and though boss Nathan Jones wanted a draw against a big club, the Scot said:
Naismith: “It’s always a good day if you get a big team. It’s not that we can’t beat the big teams, but I’d take another couple fo game that are on a level with us and let’s see if we can go on a little run and then get a big team. That’s just me personally. However it goes, it’ll be a good game.”
