Defender Mark McGuinness has completed a permanent move to Sheffield United after a surprise late transfer deadline day swoop from the Blades, with manager Matt Bloomfield admitting his disappointment but praising the player.
The 24-year-old centre-half joined the Hatters from Cardiff City last season for a fee reported to rise £10million with add-ons, though officially undisclosed, as is this Sheffield switch.
He became a mainstay in defence, making 44 appearances in all competitions and scoring three goals
After a stunted summer, in which he flew home from the club’s pre-season camp in Slovenia with a viral illness that delayed his start to the season, he returned to action and had completed 90 minutes in the last five games.
It emerged late today that Sheffield United and Ipswich were weighing up moves for the defender and after the window closed at 7pm, his departure was confirmed.
Town boss Matt Bloomfield paid tribute to McGuinness, telling the club’s website: “Mark is an incredible man who I wish nothing but success. The integrity he has shown, and the way he has conducted himself this summer with some interest, is a mark of who he is and what he stands for.
“We’re disappointed to lose him but it’s a great move for him and wish him nothing but the best.”
McGuinness joins former Luton team-mate Tahith Chong at Bramall Lane, after he made the move last week, while today former Hatters winger and Republic of Ireland international team-mate Chiedozie Ogbene has also joined United on loan from Ipswich.
McGuinness told the Blades website: “It has been a bit of a crazy window and obviously things can happen late, but Sheffield United has been a club which has been in my mind ever since I heard that there was some interest.
“There’s one thing for sure, and you can ask anyone in the game, whenever people talk about Bramall Lane, they’ll always mention the fans and the atmosphere. I remember walking down the tunnel and you hear the music and the pre-match anthem; it’s a great feeling. The stadium is always packed, it is a good atmosphere, and I know the club is well supported, so with all that in mind, I think this club is a perfect match.
“I sat next to Chongy in the dressing room, and I’ll probably sit next to him here! I know Chieo (Ogbene) as well obviously, they are top guys and more importantly they are top players. I am excited to play alongside them, and others, I’m just looking forward to getting started.”
