Luton Town manager Matt Bloomfield says new signing Joe Gbodé has the talent and character to make a big impression after the striker joined from League Two leaders Gillingham on deadline day.
Town had been linked with the 20-year-old this summer and were reported to have had two bids rejected earlier in the summer, but his arrival was finally announced 90 minutes after the window slammed shut.
The 20-year-old forward came through the academy at Gillingham, making his senior debut as a 16-year-old in the FA Cup in 2021. Loan spells at Margate, Folkestone, Hastings, Maidstone and Aveley followed, before he broke into the Gills first team last season.
“Joe’s a young man who we have kept tabs on since the end of last season and who we played against this pre-season,” Bloomfield told the club’s website.
“I know the managerial team at Gillingham very well and they have had nothing but good things to say about Joe’s talent and how high his ceiling is.
“He’s one for the future but we’re looking forward to having him in and around the group.”
Gbodé netted his first professional goal against Notts County in February and ended the campaign strongly with strikes against Wimbledon and Swindon in the final two games. He has been a regular for the Kent club this season, including scoring a dramatic injury-time equaliser at Tranmere in August.
Speaking after sealing his move to Kenilworth Road, Gbodé said: “I’m delighted to be here, it’s a great move for me and I can’t wait to get started.
“The facilities are unbelievable and it’s a well-run club with a good manager, and there are a lot of top strikers I can learn from.
“I’m quite quick, I like to dribble – and score, of course. My stats might not say that but I think I can thrive in this environment.
“Kenilworth Road is an unbelievable place; the stands are close to the pitch and that gives you that extra boost playing at home. It’s a big family here and I’m delighted to be here.”
