Luton manager Matt Bloomfield has expressed his delight at signing Thelo Aasgaard from Wigan, describing him as a player who will bring immediate quality to the Hatters squad.

The attacking midfielder scored 12 goals in 31 appearances this season for the Latics. Known for his versatility and technical skills, Aasgaard has Championship experience and is capable of playing in multiple midfield roles.

He scored twice against Town in the 2022/23 season for Athletic having moved there in 2016 from Liverpool where he came through their academy and, now a Hatter, he has already promised to “try to add goals from midfield”.

Bloomfield told the club’s website: “We’re excited to bring in Thelo to Kenilworth Road. He’s a player who has always stood out in League One but has Championship experience.

“Thelo can play as a 10, but he can also play as an eight or on the left. He’s technically very, very good and can create and score goals.”

That has proven increasingly difficult for the Hatters, particularly at home of late, as they’ve drawn a blank in their last three Championship games at Kenilworth.

The manager praised the club’s board for their support in making the deal possible, a fortnight after chief executive Gary Sweet said the club were planning to be “aggressive” in the transfer market, as they attempt to steer themselves away from the Championship relegation zone.

“The board has been incredibly supportive in this process, and I’d like to thank them for making Thelo’s signing a reality,” Bloomfield added, having expressed at the weekend his confidence in deals being done.

The manager believes Aasgaard will make a quick impact while also offering long-term potential, saying: “He’s a player who will add immediate quality to the group and comes with lots of potential. We’re looking forward to seeing what he can do as a Luton Town player.”

It marked the end of a busy day in the transfer market for Town after former player of the season Kal Naismith rejoined the Hatters on loan from Bristol City, two-and-a-half years after moving to Ashton Gate.
