Sonny Bradley says he has no problem with transfer talk about Elijah Adebayo, even suggesting it’s something to be enjoyed, providing the Hatters top scorer stays at Luton for a “long time”.
The striker has been earning rave reviews since his marked his full debut for Town last term with a goal and has already racked up ten Championship strikes this term – one of only seven players in the second tier to reach double figures already this season.
The transfer window opened on New Year’s Day and, with less than 12 months of Championship experience under his belt, the 23-year-old has already been linked to Premier League strugglers Newcastle.
“I don’t know of any transfer talk of any of our players leaving,” said the defender, adding: “Obviously, you hear a couple of rumours, but that’s the be expected when players are playing well.
“If you’ve got a striker already in double digits this season in the Championship then people might start talking about him, which I think we enjoy.
“The only reason people are having these conversations is because he’s doing so well.”
Such has been Adebayo’s meteoric rise, that skipper Bradley had previously said that he expects the forward to one day reach the top-flight – though hopefully not in the immediate future.
The centre back said: “Obviously, I don’t need to say it, but I’m hoping that Elijah stays here for a long time. Certainly, the next 18 months or so, to continue his development.
“I have said it in the past, eventually, Elijah might get to a level of football and a standard where it might be impossible to keep him, but right now he’s doing the right thing.
“He’s under contract here, but he’s doing the right thing by staying here, by learning and continuing his improvement, because he’s an important part of what we do.
“He works extremely hard on his game and it’s no coincidence that he’s improvement, from when he joined us, to now, his levels have just gone up and up and up.
“That’s a credit to himself and the work that he puts in during the week. He’s one of our hardest working players. He wants to continually improve and if he does that, eventually, he might get that big move.”
So far, Dion Pereira has left on loan to Bradford, but rather than departures, Bradley admits he’s keeping an eye on the window to see who Luton might attract to the club.
“It is exciting to see who could possibly come in to our football club and help us,” said the 30-year-old, adding: “For a player, it’s not for us to start questioning who is going to come in and start asking that question.
“I’ve said it in the past, the players have full trust in the club, that the club will do good business, if they need to do it.
“The manager, alongside Mick (Harford) and the rest of the staff, they work incredibly hard on recruitment on players who are going to come in and impact this football club.
“If there are players to come in in this transfer window, conversations probably have already taken place.
“Saying that, we’ve got a big squad and a squad full of quality as well, so whoever does come in will have to be a really good player, if they want to break into our team.
“We’re in a really good place, but if the club can do some good business, like they have in the past, I’m sure they’ll do it.”
