Luton Town have signed Wolverhampton Wanderers winger Ryan Giles, beating Middlesbrough to his signature for an undisclosed fee reported to be club record £5million.
It would be the third time this summer that the Hatters have broken their transfer record after the additions of Mads Andersen from Barnsley and Tahith Chong from Birmingham City.
Giles spent last term on loan with Middlesbrough and played twice against Luton, and both clubs were keen on signing him, but after Town won promotion to the Premier League via the Championship play-offs, the 23-year-old has opted to join the Hatters.
Giles did not travel with Wolves to their pre-season camp in Portugal in order to finalise the deal and his unveiling came with the first sight of Luton’s new white away shirt.
Like Luton boss Rob Edwards, Giles is Telford born and he up came through the Wolves’ youth set-up, where the Hatters manager played and coached, before giving the wing back his first taste of men’s football as a loan signing at AFC Telford.
“I’ve reached the point that at my age that I’ve had a lot of loans and I feel those experiences have made me the player and the person I am today. Now this is a different direction, a new beginning, a new chapter,” said Giles.
“I’m grateful to Rob for giving me my first taste of men’s football and now with the chance to work with him again, especially in the Premier League, it is a fantastic opportunity.
“I thrive off creating chances and I can’t wait to get to know my team-mates and get the fans off their seats. I’m really excited and want to hit the ground running.”
