Jacob Butterfield, Simon Sluga and Glen Rea could return to face Bournemouth in this evening’s FA Cup third round tie.

Midfielder Butterfield has not featured for the Hatters since the December 21 defeat to Swansea, when he was subbed with the score still goalless.

Town took just one point from their three following festive Championship games, but he had to make do as an unused substitute.

Asked if there was something the 29-year-old needed to improve to force his way back into the side, manager Graeme Jones said: “Jacob’s a really, really good footballer. No matter who you are, you’ve got to hide your deficiencies and show your strengths. Jacob’s in that category without a doubt.

“I’d prefer to concentrate on his strengths, which are his vision and awareness. His technical ability is outstanding, but you need to be in a moment in the season where you are mentally and physically (in form) and with a good pattern, maybe with confidence, to use Jacob.

“At his best, he’s someone I’ve got a lot of respect for and he’s someone we’re considering for (Bournemouth), definitely.”

Goalkeeper Sluga has been missing for the last two Town games through a calf injury, having got back in the side when James Shea suffered a concussion.

Jones said: “Simon Sluga has trained and he looks better, so that’s a bonus.

“But we picked up one or two (injuries) at the weekend (against Millwall) who we are going to take with us and assess, because we have to. We haven’t got a thick squad, so everybody is travelling and we’ll see where we are in the morning.”

Rea made his first appearance in just shy of a year against Stoke last month and Jones said: “I’m still assessing but Glen Rea is travelling with the group. Glen is somebody I’m considering, definitely.”

Town made numerous changes for their Carabao Cup clash against Leicester City earlier in the season.

After slipping to the foot of the Championship over the Christmas period, Jones could be tempted to ring the changes again.

Asked if that would be his strategy, the Town boss said: “The FA Cup, I know more than anybody how beautiful it can be. Then, this is the fifth game in 14 days. I’m sure Eddie’s got the same thing. All of a sudden, you’re talking about injuries, you’re talking about second teams and it shouldn’t really be like this.

“It’s such a prestigious cup competition that should be treated properly, but such is the saturation in both leagues, then it throws up that question.”
