Residents have launched a petition calling for greater investment to protect and revitalise one of Luton’s most historic streets.
The online campaign urges local politicians and the council to include High Town Road in future regeneration plans, arguing the area has been overlooked while funding has focused on the town centre, with construction works now taking place at The Stage development on Bute Street and at Luton Town Football Club’s Power Court site where their new stadium will be built.
Organisers say the street in High Town, known for its Victorian terraces, traditional shopfronts and links to Luton’s historic hat-making industry, remains a distinctive part of the town’s heritage but has not received the attention it deserves in recent years.
The petition, titled “Protect and Revitalise Historic High Town Road in Luton”, was launched on Change.org and organisers of the petition, have said: “As residents and supporters of High Town, we simply want to see this special part of Luton flourish.
“High Town Road has the potential to become one of the most charming and vibrant historic streets in our town. With the right vision and support, it could once again be a place of pride for the whole community.
“If you love Luton, care about its history, and want to see High Town Road restored and celebrated, please sign this petition and show your support.
“Together we can help ensure that High Town Road becomes a historic high street that Lutonians can truly be proud of.”
Campaigners also say that High Town Road sits within the High Town Conservation Area and has been identified as being at risk by Historic England, making preservation and investment increasingly important.
The petition calls on Luton South MP Rachel Hopkins, along with councillors James Taylor and Umme Ali and Luton Council, to support initiatives that would help restore and promote the street’s historic character.
Among the ideas suggested by supporters are restoring historic façades and traditional shopfronts, improving paving and lighting, and encouraging independent businesses such as bakeries, cafés, florists and craft shops.
The street’s location close to Luton Train Station gives it potential to become a welcoming gateway for visitors arriving in the town.
The petition proposes that regeneration funding could be used to support heritage-led improvements, similar to schemes elsewhere in the UK backed by organisations such as Historic England and the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
Supporters say their aim is to see High Town Road transformed into a thriving heritage high street that celebrates Luton’s past while supporting local businesses and community life.
