Lutonians have voted for a mural that aims to illuminate Luton town centre and transform Silver Street and Library Road with its message of “opportunity, unity and creativity”..
The Rough Gemstones project created by Silvia Lerín, a Spanish visual artist based in Luton, will be completed in June after a month-long public vote held online and in-person at The Mall saw the suggested emerald design come out on top, ahead of ruby, diamond and sapphire.
Jacki Flower, Luton BID operation Manager, said: “With significant support from Luton Borough Council, the Culture Trust Luton and The Mall, we have been working tirelessly on this project that will transform a prominent space within the town.
“With its vibrant colours and intricate geometric layout, this mural celebrates the multicultural brilliance, symbolising 225,226 individuals as gemstones and is set to illuminate Luton with its message of opportunity, unity and creativity in the heart of the city.
“We are delighted the public have taken the project to heart and voted in their numbers, with hundreds of votes cast as people took a keen interest in the look and feel of the mural. It’s going to be a captivating piece of public art in a cherished part of our town’s landscape.”
