Carlton Morris has completed a permanent move to Derby County, bringing an end to a three-year stay at Kenilworth Road in which he fired Luton Town to the Premier League.
The 29-year-old forward has penned a three-year deal with the Rams and leaves Bedfordshire after he became a firm favourite with the Hatters faithful in his debut campaign after arriving from Barnsley in the summer of 2022. He made an immediate impact, scoring 20 goals in his first season – his best senior goalscoring campaign – to help Luton to promotion via the Championship play-offs.
Morris etched his name into club folklore by converting his penalty in the shoot-out win over Coventry City at Wembley, then followed it up with another spot-kick to score Luton’s first-ever Premier League goal in the opening match of the 2023/24 season at Brighton.
A month later, he struck the winner at Goodison Park to secure the Hatters’ first Premier League victory – a 2-1 triumph over Everton – and went on to finish as the club’s top scorer with 11 goals in their maiden top-flight campaign, but Town were relegated on the final day of the season.
Wearing the captain’s armband for the past 18 months, Morris again finished as Luton’s leading scorer with eight goals last season, but he suffered another relegation with the club to League One.
In total, he scored 39 times in 137 appearances for the club.
Paying tribute to the striker, manager Matt Bloomfield told the club’s website: “Carlton has been a big player for our football club for a long time now, and in the relatively short spell that we have worked with him, he has led by example and given everything for the cause.
“We understand his desire to continue his career at the highest level he can, and he leaves to join Derby with our best wishes. I’m sure I speak for everyone in saying he’ll always be a welcome visitor at Kenilworth Road for what he helped the club achieve, and we all wish him well for his future career.”
