Striker James Collins thinks he can develop an attacking partnership with Callum McManaman that will help replace his old Jack Stacey supply line.
The Hatters hotshot got off to a scoring start in his second-tier debut with an 85th minute equaliser in the 3-3 draw with Middlesbrough, converting a rebound after left back Dan Potts saw a shot blocked.
Last season, however, it was down the right where Collins got so much of his service, linking up well with Stacey. But any hope of seeing that partnership put to the test in the Championship ended when Bournemouth raided Town for the full back’s services in the summer.
But the club had already made former Wigan winger McManaman their first summer signing and, while the FA Cup winner couldn’t claim an assist against Boro on his competitive Luton debut, he did work well with Collins in a promising display.
The Town striker said: “Callum has had a great career and he’s made a great career of getting at people one v one, creating goals and scoring goals.
“I’ve worked with him for six weeks now and we’re just starting to get that little understanding between each other now. It didn’t quite come off (against Middlesbrough) but I’m quite confident further down the line we’ll create some havoc together.”
Hatters boss Graeme Jones is still working to bring in more new recruits before the transfer window shuts at 5pm on Thursday.
Former Luton striker Isaac Vassell is a player the manager is keen on, though he said the situation surrounding a deal for the Birmingham forward is ‘complicated’, with one report tonight suggesting that Cardiff are now in pole position to steal in and sign him ahead of their clash with Town on Saturday.
But if Luton could get a deal over the line, Collins would welcome the pacey frontman back, having played alongside him for three matches at the start of the 2017/18 campaign before City swooped for a fee reported to be around the £1million mark.
“Isaac has been mentioned, I know him really well and if he does come through the door I think it would be fantastic signing because he was brilliant the Luton before he went to Birmingham and he was really good for Birmingham before his injury as well.
“He’s a lovely guy, so if he comes through the door it can only help us going forward.”
