Harry Cornick knows Luton need to become more consistent if they are to avoid the relegation this term but says the Hatters believe they’re better than their basement position.
Town have found it tough in the Championship, having won two successive promotions and smashing club records last term to claim the League One title.
They now sit bottom of the pile, four points adrift from safety, but with the worst goal difference in the division having taken just one point from their last six games.
Tomorrow they host Birmingham City and Cornick said: “We’re quite an inconsistent team at the minute which we need to rectify if we’re going to pick up points and start climbing the table.
“We wouldn’t be here if we didn’t think we could get out of this. We don’t think we should be in the position we’re in.
“We think we’re better than getting relegated this year. It’s the position we’re in right now so we’ve got to keep working hard on the training pitch and put in the performances to try to climb the table.”
But Cornick insists Luton weren’t naïve in understanding the challenges the Championship would present them.
“We knew what we were coming into,” he said, adding: “When you come up from League Two to League One, it’s not as much of a jump, but the League One to Championship jump is massive.
“There are some massive clubs in the league which we have to compete against. They’re not bigger clubs, but they’ve got bigger wage bills, they’ve got players who’ve played in the Premier League and we’re coming into it.
“We’ve got to show them no respect and believe we can turn over any team. We’ve shown that this year. We’ve gone toe-to-toe with some of the best teams in the league, we’ve come been getting points against them.
“We need to keep believing that we can stay up and keep playing for the points.”
While Cornick has had a series of failures in one-on-ones situations over the last month, including one against his boyhood team Bournemouth at the weekend, he has started far more games than in any previous season with Town.
“Personally, I think I’ve had an alright campaign so far,” the attacker said, adding: “I’ve scored six, which is a good tally for me, but I know I could do better than that.
“I think all the boys know they can keep improving because in each game we’re getting better and more acclimatised to the league, but we’re halfway through he season now, we can’t keep saying that in every game.”
