Luton Council has issued a warning about potential traffic disruption as thousands of people are expected to attend Eid-al-Adha celebrations across the town from Friday 6 to Sunday 8 June.

The Muslim festival is a key date in the Islamic calendar and has grown in popularity in recent years, drawing large crowds to community events in Luton’s parks. This year’s largest gatherings will take place at Stockwood Park and Wardown Park, where high attendance is anticipated throughout the weekend.

In response, the council will introduce a range of traffic control and enforcement measures aimed at keeping event-goers safe, managing congestion and ensuring emergency vehicles can access all areas.

Councillor Javed Hussain, deputy leader of Luton Council, said: “Whilst it’s great that communities are coming together to celebrate on such a special occasion, the increasing popularity of these events are putting increasing strain on local infrastructure and the road network.

“We understand the frustrations of residents which is why we are stepping and to put in place measures to mitigate disruptions and ensure safety for those living near to the events and those attending. For those not attending we strongly advise they avoid the areas of the two festivals during the weekend”.

“Given the growing popularity of these events, the council will be meeting with event organisers over the coming months to see what can be done to further minimise the impact and disruption for future events.”

But this weekend, the authority is encouraging those attending to use public transport or car share where possible. Anyone driving to the events is urged to park safely and considerately to avoid fines or having their vehicle removed.

In the Stockwood Park area, road restrictions will be in effect on Friday 6 and Saturday 7 June. No waiting or loading will be permitted on sections of Farley Hill Road, London Road, Cutenhoe Road, Wipperley Way and Newlands Road. Whitehill Avenue will be closed to all but residents and enforced on both days. Diversion signs will be in place.

In the Wardown Park area, similar restrictions will be in place from Friday 6 to Sunday 8 June. These include parts of Old Bedford Road, New Bedford Road and adjoining roads such as Cromwell Hill, Stockingstone Road and Montrose Avenue.

All restricted areas will be clearly marked with signs and cones. Full details of the traffic measures can be found at one.network.
