Luton’s Championship game at home to Coventry on Wednesday will go ahead after the Football League announced the fixture programme will return as scheduled from tomorrow, following controversial postponements in the wake of The Queen’s death.

The Hatters’ visit to Stoke on Saturday was postponed along with all football matches after the country’s longest-serving monarch passed away on Thursday, starting a period of national mourning.

Other sports including cricket and rugby union continued as normal after government guidance said there was ‘no obligation’ for sporting events to be cancelled.

It sparked criticism from the Football Supporters’ Association, who said it was an ‘opportunity missed for football to pay its own special tribute to The Queen’.

With football set to return, a minute’s silence will be held before Town’s clash with Coventry, with black armbands worn by players, flags to be flown at half-mast and the national anthem to be played.

In a statement, the EFL said: ‘The EFL fixture programme will return as schedule from Tuesday 13 September, with tributes to be paid to Her late Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II at grounds around the country.”
