Rob Edwards believes he had the making of a good plan to tackle away days at Norwich, so will be looking for a similar performance at Blackburn but minus the major mistakes.
Town travel to Ewood Park on the back of a morale boosting last-gasp 2-1 victory at home to Stoke on Tuesday, but knowing that they’re in the grip of a six-game losing streak away from Kenilworth Road.
The last of those came at Norwich, where the Hatters took the lead, but conceded two before half time, due to errors. And after they restored parity, they shot themselves in the foot in the last ten minutes to lose 4-2.
It left Edwards “raging” after the game at the mistakes that have been too often a factor in Luton’s season.
While it was that no-nonsense reaction that dominated the immediate aftermath, Edwards believes that, aside from the errors, there was plenty to show that his men can stop the rot on the road.
“Without sort of giving everything away, there’s a good and a decent way for us,” the manager said, adding: “Clearly Norwich is different to Blackburn, but in terms of a blueprint, there was there was a lot of good stuff there for us to be able to use. No doubt about it.”
On the mistakes that put paid to that plan, Edwards said: “Last time out away at Norwich that was what cost us. That’s why I was so upset that day because the performance was good, and speaking to their manager after he said ‘2-2, we couldn’t get it through, we couldn’t find a way’, and you could see that we had a little control in that game at the time, but just obviously let ourselves down with a couple of errors, or more than a couple on the day. Clearly, that’s (eradicating mistakes) really important for us.”
Town will have to do it against a Rovers side who are one of the Championship’s form teams, having won their last five, with the four straight 1-0 victories.
Combined with Town’s poor record on the road it would appear a daunting task, but not for Edwards.
“I think everyone’s aware of it,” said the Hatters boss of the troubles away from home.
“The challenge for us is like, come on, we’ve had two results, let’s go and make it three. Last time, away from home, we made some mistakes, but overall the performance was good. So, we can take some from that, but clearly without the mistakes.
“Let’s go and perform again like that, let’s go and be brave. Let’s take a lot of the stuff that we did well in midweek and try to put into action.”
Town, who have gone four games unbeaten against Blackburn, will have the addition of Liam Walsh who will travel to Lancashire after three weeks out with a hamstring injury.
