Rob Edwards hailed new signing Lamine Fanne’s first foray in English football, despite last night’s 2-1 defeat to Queens Park Rangers, but has made an admission about his positioning.

The 20-year-old signed for the Hatters in the summer but was immediately loaned back to Swedish top-flight side AIK until the end of their season in November. He joined the Hatters after that but could only be registered from January 1.

Last night was the first time Fanne was available to play and he was immediately handed a start at Loftus Road. When he signed, Edwards explained that he’s “more of a defensive midfielder”, but the Senegalese ace was deployed in more of a number 10 role, just behind lone striker Carlton Morris. There he linked up well with the skipper and had two chances but fired wide of the target.

Then, when Elijah Adebayo was introduced on 74 minutes, Fanne dropped deeper and was equally impressive until he was replaced by Cauley Woodrow.

“He’s probably played a bit too advanced,” Edwards said of the majority of the midfielder’s positioning.

“Obviously, once we made the change with Elijah coming on as well, playing slightly deeper and being able to play with Walshie (Liam Walsh), we wanted him to be able to run onto the game. He’s good at driving with the ball. We wanted to have that link so that Carlton wasn’t isolated as well.

“But we want to try and get him on the on the ball even more. Look, it’s his first game. I thought he showed some really good bits. It was a bit of a, ‘this is England’ (experience) as well.

“That was a good debut, considering he’s not had a game for a long, long time and he’s only been in training. He did have a couple of chances, which is a positive because we know we can get there and he can arrive. So yeah, he was a real plus.”
