Edwards in a position to say ‘no’ to transfer bids for his Hatters

Rob Edwards says he’s under no pressure to sell stars this transfer window and that the Luton are now in a position to rebuff any bids that would break up Town’s team.

Crystal Palace have been linked with both Teden Mengi and Gabriel Osho, with the latter also reported to have caught Aston Villa’s eye.

Despite sitting in the Premier League relegation zone, the Hatters have been earning plaudits for the way they’ve been playing in recent weeks.

They won twice over Christmas and before that were seconds away from a victory against Liverpool and a point against Arsenal, while taking the lead and only posting 2-1 to champions Manchester City. Those games saw the in-form Ross Barkley, Alfie Doughty and Elijah Adebayo come to the fore.

Asked if he expected any bids for his players this month, Edwards said: “Our players are worth a lot of money now so there’s got to be some hefty bids if there’s anyone coming in for our players.

“We are in a position where we can say “no” to pretty much anything really. I’m not under any pressure to sell, certainly.

“If we feel that it strengthens us, or it’s the right thing to do, then someone can go. Again, it will be down to whether that’s going to help us and makes us stronger in the long-run. I probably expect a little bit of shifting around, but not much.

“I try and expect anything, be ready and prepared for anything, we talk about that in our recruitment meetings, but so far there hasn’t been. It’s been pretty quiet and hopefully it remains that way.”

Edwards added: “I think there’s always going to be enquiries. It’s natural that there would be. I think it shows we’ve got some good players here that have performed at Championship level as well, so there’s always going to be a bit of interest, but there’s nothing that interests us in losing anyone and the moment.”

However, asked if he’d need to let players leave to bring players in this month, the manager said: “There’s a number of different ways to do it. I’m saying there’s going to be players in. If it’s one, or if it stays as we are, I’d genuinely be happy as well.

“I wouldn’t be surprised to see one or two little bits of change but I think it’s important to stress that I don’t want too much.

“We’ll come out of the window stronger and I know we will do, but keeping a lot of what we’ve got is really important to me.

“I’ve experienced it before when we got promoted with Blackpool. Maybe a little bit of change in the January window can change things a bit and that’s always stayed with me.”
