Rob Edwards says Luton are not in yet in a position to be talking a potential Championship relegation battle.
Town host Swansea today in their 19th game of the league season, so they’re past a third of the campaign and they sit in 19th place, after two defeats at Leeds and Norwich.
The 4-2 defeat at Carrow Road last weekend came with a rare angry rant from manager Edwards, as he laid the blame for the loss at his players making mistakes.
He’s said his squad have accepted the criticism in the week since, but six straight defeats on the road, will inevitably ramp up the pressure on on their home form, which is currently keeping them three points ahead of the drop zone and Hull, who they beat last time out at Kenilworth Road.
Luton were relegated from the Premier League last term, but asked if his side are facing second successive trap door fight, Edwards said: “Look, I’m not looking that far ahead at the moment. It’s the next game and it’s about finding that consistency. I’ll just repeat myself on that at the moment.
“No, I think we’re not in a position at the moment to talk about whatever the season is going to be. It’s too far ahead at the moment. We’re in the situation that we’re in. We’ve got to find improvements and consistency to get ourselves away from that.”
As they bid to get back to winning ways today, Town will be without the crocked Reece Burke and Liam Walsh against his former side, plus at least two other Hatters, who Edwards said suffered “freakish” injuries in the week, though he wouldn’t reveal who they are.
But the manager is hoping for some home comforts to ease Town’s travel sickness, saying: “The fans have been with us there (Kenilworth Road). There’s no doubt about it, we need that. But I understand football. You don’t win unless you’re winning. And we’ve got to win. We got to get results, home and away. And and that’s when people are happy.
“But at the moment, it’s a good feeling when we’re at Kenilworth Road, which is important. Of course we want to be able to, to rely on that.”
