Rob Edwards has revealed why referee Anthony Taylor did not play any added time at the end of Luton’s 6-2 defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup on Tuesday.
Having played beyond 100 minutes in Premier League games this term, to account for stoppages in play, there was widespread bemusement as to why time was called at the first opportunity in the knockout competition.
The second half had brought four goals, three breaks for substitutions and treatment for Jeremy Doku which should have at least meant a conservative estimate of five minutes of time still to play after the 90.
But Edwards revealed of the officials: “They’d spoken to us. If it was the league, it can’t happen.
“But it was unlikely in added time that we were going to score four, so the game was pretty much done.
“They were happy and I thought, yeah, I’m happy, let’s just get out of here now. So that was why.
“Obviously, in the league, you can’t because it’s got to be fair. It’s got to be fair game, goal difference, so there probably would’ve been another nine minutes and that would’ve been interesting.”
