End of Luke Bolton’s loan spell ‘was his and Man City’s choice, not mine,’ says Jones

Luton boss Nathan Jones has revealed that it was Luke Bolton and Manchester City’s decision to end his loan deal last week.

The right back spent the season on loan with the Hatters and made 28 appearance, the last of which came as a substitute in the 1-1 draw with Leeds United last Tuesday.

But Town announced the next day the 20-year-old would return to his Premier League parent club, while Izzy Brown (Chelsea), James Bree (Aston Villa) and Cameron Carter-Vickers (Tottneham) would stay until the end of the season.

Asked about the move today, Jones said: “That was his choice. That was his and Man City’s choice, not mine.

“I wanted to keep everyone together, galvanise them. I used him against Leeds and then he was gone the next day. That wasn’t my choice.

“That was Luke wanting to go, so did Man City (who) wanted to recall him, so we were very respectful of that. It’s their prerogative to be able to do that, but from our point of view, we were quite prepared to keep him.”

Writing on Twitter last week after his return to Manchester City, Bolton said: ‘One whirlwind of a year, sad to say goodbye. Thanks to the lads for welcoming me in & making me feel part of the club. Massive shoutout to the fans for your support, it makes a great difference. Keep fighting @LutonTown! All the best, Bolts.’

Izzy Brown has subsequently gone back to Chelsea for check-ups after missing out on Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with Barnsley with an achilles injury.

Asked if that could be the last Luton see of the playmaker, Jones said: “We’ll have to wait and see. We sent him back because he’s their player, so we could get medical opinions, then we’ll see if we get anything out of him.”
