Tim Krul has confirmed his retirement from professional football, three months after leaving Luton Town.

The 37-year-old Dutch goalkeeper brought the curtain down on a career spanning more than two decades in the Premier League – where he made 222 appearances for Newcastle and Norwich – and on the international stage with the Netherlands.

Krul joined the Hatters from the Canaries in 2023 for their first ever season in the Premier League, but he was number two to Thomas Kaminski, so managed only six appearances over two seasons he was at the club. His final outing coming in the 6-2 FA Cup defeat to Manchester City at Kenilworth Road in February 2024.

Announcing his decision live on Sky Sports, Krul said the decision had been “difficult” and then on social media, he said: “As I hang up my gloves after 20 incredible years as a professional football player, I want to take a moment to reflect on my journey.

“From joining Newcastle as a 17-year-old boy to representing Holland on the international stage. I have truly lived the dream I had as a young boy in every match and every training session, and every rollercoaster moment has shaped me into who I am today.

“Thank you to the clubs, coaches, team mates, my beautiful family and most importantly you fans for your support throughout my career. I am excited for the next chapter and will always cherish the memories made on the pitch.

“Here’s to new adventure off the pitch! Thank you, Tim Krul.”
