Luton and Dunstable University Hospital has welcomed its first baby born in the brand new Cedar Wing, marking a proud milestone for the recently opened maternity and neonatal facilities.
Baby Leo arrived at 6.08pm on 11 November, weighing 3,455 grams, becoming the first newborn delivered in the hospital’s new state-of-the-art unit.
His mum, Malgorzata, praised both the care she received and the new surroundings.
“It was an incredible experience to be the first to give birth in the new unit. The facilities are absolutely fantastic, and the team have looked after me and my baby so well. I’m very grateful for the care and support of midwife Victoria, midwife Kerry, and the overall team.”
The Cedar Wing, part of Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust’s multi-million pound redevelopment, includes modern birthing suites, midwife-led facilities, and new areas designed to support families through every stage of pregnancy and birth.
Emma Hardwick, Director of Midwifery, said welcoming Leo marked the beginning of a new era for the L&D’s maternity services.
“Our warmest congratulations to mum Malgorzata and baby Leo. We wish you every happiness for the future.
“A huge thank you to our marvellous staff, whose compassion and dedication has shone through during this transition. Throughout all the changes, you have continued to put families first and deliver outstanding care.”
She added that the move into Oak Wing and Cedar Wing represents “a new chapter” for maternity care in Luton, with facilities designed to give pregnant women and birthing people “a safe and supportive environment throughout their pregnancy journeys.”
