Food waste collections are being extended to flats across Luton, with residents set to receive new kitchen caddies and communal food waste bins.
The service has already been introduced to more than 60,000 households with kerbside collections earlier this year.
It is now being rolled out to flats in eight stages between September 2026 and the end of March 2027, with the rollout divided into areas of Luton and aligned with existing waste and recycling collection rounds.
The first round of food waste collections for flats began on Monday 14 September, with further areas being brought into the scheme over the coming months.
Residents will be visited by the team delivering the food waste caddies when their area is due to join the service. They will also be given information about how the scheme works and when their food waste collections will begin.
Each flat will receive a small blue kitchen caddy for collecting food waste.
Larger communal food waste bins will be provided where residents’ other bins are stored, allowing food waste to be emptied from the kitchen caddies.
Cllr Steve Stephens, Portfolio Holder for Strategic Waste Authority, said the expansion would allow more Luton residents to recycle their food waste separately.
“We are pleased to be extending food waste recycling to residents living in flats across Luton.
“While reducing food waste in the first place is always the best option, recycling unavoidable food waste separately will help reduce the amount of rubbish going into refuse bins and turn it into something useful, including renewable energy and fertiliser.”
The council says residents can find information about what can and cannot be put in their food waste caddies on its website, along with further details about the collection service.
