Nathan Jones’ 250th game in charge of Luton will be remembered for Elijah Adebayo’s penalty miss and a frustrating finale against ten-man Nottingham Forest as Town failed to find the net for a third match in a row.
A point avoided only a second straight hat-trick of defeats of the managers two tenures, but while the hosts rarely threatened, the Hatters squandered a golden chance from the spot but still had 30 minutes to find a winner. Yet again, a lack of quality in the final third let them down.
Jack Colback was shown his marching orders for a foul on Tom Lockyer to concede the penalty on the hour and, though Brice Samba dived the wrong way, his trailing leg was long enough to direct Adebayo’s shot over the bar.
Jones said of side’s third straight blank: “These are the moments that are stopping us being a top six side and we have to just rectify that, but we are very respectful of the level and where we are. We have a bottom three budget so that means I cannot go out and sign (Fulham’s Aleksander) Mitrovic.
“That’s not being disrespectful to my players. I think we’re really giving everything, we deserved another victory tonight.”
They did on balance of play, but given his side’s numerical advantage for the last 30 minutes, one Kal Naismith injury time volley on target and a decent, but unheeded, second spot-kick shout did not make a great case for victory.
Jones said: “We had 16 shots the other day and two on target, so we’re creating enough, we’re keeping the ball well enough, our XG is top three. I’m sick of the numbers, it’s just that we’re not demonstrating the quality.
“Then we have a penalty and miss. We should’ve had two more penalties by the way because straight after there’s a foul on Fred (Onyedinma). He’s never going to give it. Then there’s a foul on Lockyer, which is even more blatant than the first one.
“If we score that penalty, then they have to come out and it could’ve been more. Tactically, we were good, our changes were good, everything was good tonight. We’ve come here and good a point, which isn’t a bad result at the City Ground, considering these are ex-European champions, but we’re disappointed because it’s two (points) dropped tonight because we were better.”
At the opposite end Forest equally toothless. James Shea made his first Championship appearance in 11 months – with Croatian stopper Simon Sluga forced to miss out through contact on international duty with someone that has tested positive for Covid – and had to make only one save, thwarting Lyle Taylor.
It meant an eighth clean sheet of the campaign, complete with Forest not officially registering a shot on target on their own patch, despite that Taylor chance. So, that is one positive – but all of a sudden Town can’t buy a goal.
Adebayo and Harry Cornick have been responsible for the lion’s share them this season. The latter started on the bench and once Samba’s boot denied Town’s top scorer, there was a sinking feeling that, in a contest lacking in quality, their chance of victory had gone. It was a sobering thought on the hour mark.
Jones said of his striker: “He’s disappointed, but he works at it. The keeper was a mile off his line, by the way. VAR would’ve made him take it again, but you get an opportunity (you’ve got to take them). He doesn’t miss penalties normally, so we’ll just dust ourselves down and go again.”
That turning point aside, just one last-gasp kitchen sink blast on target from Naismith is something that needs correcting, but Jones said: “We have to realise where we are and where we’ve come from. We’re spending minute amounts compared to a hell of a lot of people at this level. We know we’ve got to work to get to the level, but we’re a good side and we’re punching way above our weight.
“That’s what we’ve got to demand of them and I’m proud of them tonight because we’ve come to the City Ground and, up until the sending off, they were no threat.
“I can’t remember then having a chance. We gave them one with Pelly-Ruddock but, apart from that, they didn’t have a shot on target. How often do Nottingham Forest not have a shot on target?”
Certainly, while Luton won’t escape the feeling that this was two points dropped, perhaps a sense of perspective should dictate that such disappointments at the City Ground are a sign of the ambition they’re aiming for.
They’re not quite clicking at the moment, but Town have been in far worse predicaments. The big picture is that, for 250 games, Jones has largely got it right.

Yes, NJ’s largely got it right – but don’t go down the GJ road. Forest did win the European Cup – a long time ago. At the moment, just like us, they’re a mid-table Championship side, and if the penalty had gone in we probably would have won. And no – we can’t sign Mitrovic, but our ‘bottom three budget’ has served us well. NJ says he’s ‘not being disrespectful’ to his players, and he does talk them up. But we could do without all the ‘punching way above our weight’ stuff. We’re where we deserve to be – and proud of it.
Not saying, of course, that we should lack ambition. I remember when we first got up into the old First Division. Fantastic time! But the timing needs to be right. We don’t want to be just another yo-yo club – despite the financial rewards.
