Luton’s record signing Ryan Giles has completed a loan switch to Championship side Hull City with an option to buy in the summer, after an unfulfilled six months at Kenilworth Road.
The wide man was signed from Wolverhampton Wanderers in the summer for a reported club record £5million fee, though officially undisclosed, having enjoyed an impressive season-long loan at Middlesbrough last term, registering 12 assists in 48 appearances as they reached the Championship play-offs.
But though he began the season as a starter for Luton in the Premier League, he lost his place early on to Alfie Doughty whose revelatory form restricted Giles to just 14 appearances, largely from the bench.
After getting his man, Hull head coach Liam Rosenior told the Tigers’ website: “I’m absolutely delighted that Ryan is joining the club and that he’s decided to come here. He’s a top full-back at this level and we want to improve and develop him with us.
“He’s going to make a huge difference to our team, give us balance and a real attacking threat on the left side of the pitch.
“He has played a lot of Championship games, brings experience of promotion pushes, fits into our style of play and has outstanding athletic ability and technical quality in the final third.
“I like attacking full-backs and Ryan is one of the best in the league.”
While Giles was in Hull for a medical yesterday, Hatters boss Rob Edwards, who had worked with the winger at both Wolves and signing him on loan when he managed Telford United in 2018, said: “With Gilo, (he’s) a fantastic person and I think it’s just the right one for him as well as the football club. If it does go through and it happens then of course we wish him well.”
