Give Walsh a chance ‘to make up for it’, says Edwards after red card bans

Rob Edwards has called on fans to give Liam Walsh the chance to make up for his disciplinary problems.

The midfielder has twice been sent off for dangerous tackles, and been suspended for a total of seven games, on top of injury issues, which have restricted him to just 11 Championship appearances so far this season.

The latest four-match ban saw Walsh miss the Christmas period, and he issued a written apology to fans via the club’s social media accounts, saying: ‘I understand how much I’ve let you down and I own up to that, there is no excuse’.

On Monday night, Walsh was thrust straight back into action at the first opportunity as Town lost 2-1 at Queens Park Rangers.

Despite that tenth away defeat on the spin, Walsh led the way with Carlton Morris for passes (six) into the final third as Town registered their joint most amount of shots (18) away from Kenilworth Road this term.

He was also the only Luton player, other than a defender, in the combined top ten for touches of the ball, as the second highest (76) behind Amari’i Bell (79).

Edwards said: “I thought he did well. You can see why can’t you as well? Because he can give you a different level of football. He can take the ball, he can take it under pressure and he can and give you a footing and control in the game.

“So, look, he apologised, he made his mistakes. I think everyone needs to give him the opportunity now to make up for it, and I thought tonight was a real positive on that

“There’ll be a lot of pressure on him after what happened, a lot of scrutiny. But that was a really good performance from him. And, again, along with Lamine (Fanne), another plus for us.”
