Thelo Aasgaard has admitted it’s “hard to say” if he will remain a Luton Town player next season as the midfielder eyes a place in Norway’s World Cup squad with repeated warnings from his national coach that League One players won’t be considered.
The 23-year-old, who arrived at Kenilworth Road from Wigan Athletic in January, made 17 appearances and scored twice for the Hatters in the second half of the campaign. Despite his efforts, Luton were relegated to League One after finishing third from bottom and ending the season with a 5-3 defeat at West Bromwich Albion.
Aasgaard, who was born in Liverpool but qualifies for Norway through his father, made his senior international debut in March, scoring and assisting in a 5-0 win over Moldova in World Cup qualifying. He is currently away on international duty again with Norway, who have not qualified for the World Cup since 1998, set to face Italy and Estonia.
Asked by Norwegian outlet VG whether he expects to still be at Luton next season, Aasgaard responded: “It’s hard to say. It’s a difficult situation for the club. I felt I performed well in a difficult situation for the club. Everyone is on vacation now. I’m just focusing on the game on Friday. What I can say is that the World Championship in a year is a big goal for me.”
It comes after Norway head coach Ståle Solbakken previously suggested in May that playing in League One would make it difficult for Aasgaard to continue being picked for his national side.
And this week he again has made it clear Aasgaard needs to move on if he wants to remain in the international picture.
“League One is too low a level,” said Solbakken. “Championship is no problem, with his development that level is good enough, but with League One, that’s where it stops. There are many leagues he can play in. He is a versatile midfielder with good qualities both offensively and defensively.”
