Luton Town have been fined £35,000 by an independent Regulatory Commission for breaching FA Rule E21 in relation to crowd control at their game against Sunderland in the EFL Championship play-off semi-final on Tuesday 16 May 2023.

Town overturned a 1-0 lead that the Black Cats took to Kenilworth Road from the first leg at The Stadium of Light, to win 2-1 and book their place at Wembley. It was a result that saw supporters pour onto the pitch in celebration.

Also, early in the match, cameras caught the moment a home supporter, who has since been banned by the club, struck Sunderland striker Amad Diallo as he went to take a throw-in.

The decision to fine Town came after the club requested a personal hearing with an FA statement saying: “An independent Regulatory Commission has fined Luton Town £35,000 for breaching FA Rule E21 in relation to crowd control at their game against Sunderland in the EFL Championship on Tuesday 16 May 2023.

“Luton Town admitted that they failed to ensure their spectators and/or supporters (and anyone purporting to be supporters or followers): Conducted themselves in an orderly fashion;

“Did not behave in an improper, threatening, violent and/or provocative way in the 14th minute; and Did not commit any form of pitch incursion following the final whistle.

“The Regulatory Commission imposed the club’s sanction following a hearing.”
