A Swedish football expert has predicted a bright future at Luton for Lamine Fanne, hinting that the Hatters have a hot prospect on their hands after signing the young midfielder from AIK.
Town signed the 20-year-old in the summer but loaned him back to finish off the Allsvenskan season, where he helped steer the Stockholm club to a third place finish and qualification for the Europa League.
Fanne joined Town after the Swedish top-flight season ended in November and he made his Luton debut at Queens Park Rangers on January 6 where, in his last game in charge, for Hatters boss Rob Edwards deployed the Senegal-born ace in a more advanced number 10 role.
In Sweden, Fanne had largely operated in a deeper role and he excelled there for Luton when current boss Matt Bloomfield played him in a pivot role – his first 90 minutes in orange, but only his third appearance – as the Hatters drew 1-1 at Sheffield Wednesday last month, ending their 12-game away-day losing streak.
Speaking on the Luton Town Supporters’ Trust podcast, the co-host of the Nordic Football Podcast, Steve Wyss, has described Fanne as a versatile player with the physical and technical attributes to thrive in the Championship.
“I think this is a really good player,” Wyss said enthusiastically, adding: “He’s got the whole package and can play any role you want in midfield. But for me, I’d play him as an eight — a proper box-to-box midfielder.”
Wyss praised Fanne’s ability to drive forward and deliver crucial assists after a highly-rated season in Sweden.
“If you look at some of the assists he had for AIK, he was getting onto the edge of the penalty area and pulling the ball back,” Wyss explained. “He’s got really good strength and decision-making for his age.”
And while Fanne’s first month in English football has been restricted, due to a three-week ankle injury, sustained in FA Cup action at Nottingham Forest, injuries haven’t been a significant issue for the midfielder.
“You haven’t signed a guy with a massive history of injuries, don’t worry,” Wyss reassured fans, whose team have been blighted by significant injury problems for a year.
