‘He’s not Frank Lampard yet,’ but Wilshere praises goalscoring Luton prospect

Jack Wilshere has praised Lamine Fanne after he scored for the second game running, after the Luton manager previously joked about turning the 21-year-old into a goalscoring midfielder like Chelsea legend Frank Lampard.

The Spaniard, who bagged the winner at Northampton and was then compared to the ex-England hero, struck again and assisted Nahki Wells as the Hatters raced into a 3-0 lead in Friday night’s dramatic 4-3 FA Cup win over Forest Green Rovers.

Fanne’s performances have caught the eye of Wilshere, who believes the youngster is developing into a well-rounded, goal-minded midfielder, who is now starting to show a knack for being in the right place at the right time.

“I told you, he has a way of arriving,” said the Luton boss, adding: “Of course, he’s not Frank Lampard yet, and I want to get that clear, but he’s someone who’s interesting because,. when you’re in development football and you’re coming through, people say, ‘Is he a number six? Is he a number eight? Is he a number 10?’

“Sometimes that’s OK and you can specialise in one position. You can have a little bit of everything – and he’s not there yet, Lamine, he’s not – I think at the minute he’s probably a little bit more comfortable a little bit lower, with the game in front of him.”

Against Forest Green, Fanne was pushed further forward and rewarded his manager’s faith with two well-timed run into the box that presented almost identical scoring chances, though he missed the first.

“He played a little bit higher and he arrived in the box,” Wilshere said. “He nearly got one before and then he executed the second one better. I’m happy for him and hopefully he can keep that going.”
