Rob Edwards says the absence of West Bromwich Albion’s top scorer Brandon Thomas-Asante won’t provide any respite against an in-form Baggies, but says his Luton side are also high on confidence.
The seven-goal forward will start the first of a three-game suspension when Town host Albion tomorrow in the Championship. That was after retrospective video evidence was reviewed of Thomas-Asante elbowing Chesterfield’s Jeff King in their third-round 3-3 draw at the weekend.
The 24-year-old scored the leveller in that cup tie and his goals have helped propel West Brom up the Championship table. But Edwards doesn’t expect Thomas-Asante’s absence will make tomorrow’s task any easier.
He said: “They’ve got good players who can come in. (Daryl) Dike has been starting games anyway, and then they’ve got others who can play, so the depth they’ve got in their squad.
“I know (Thomas-Asante) he’s had a good season, he’s a good player, and he’s not available for our game now, but they’ve just got another really good player who can come in, Dike might have started anyway.”
West Brom are on a run of eight wins in nine in the Championship under boss Carlos Corberan, who replaced Steve Bruce in October after Luton draw 0-0 with them at The Hawthorns.
Edwards said of the Baggies’ form: “(It’s) incredible. They deserve all the plaudits they’re getting at the moment, they have done great.
“He’s a very talented coach, as a club we’re obviously aware of him from his work last year and the year before at Huddersfield and how well he did there.
“They’ve come straight in with a good group of players at West Brom and began to get results. We know how tough the weekend will be.
“West Brom in the Championship are a very big fish and usually if they’re in this league, they’re used to competing at the top end of it. With the players they have got, you would expect them to be there as well.
“They’re obviously making a charge now, they have a lot of quality. When we played them in a previous life earlier in the season you could see the quality that they had.
“They weren’t getting the results for whatever reason but they were playing well, creating chances, they weren’t giving many chances away and weren’t quite getting over the line, now they are and they will be confident. But we are and we’re always confident at home.”
Since replacing Nathan Jones as Luton boss in November, Edwards has led the Hatters to three league wins on the spin.
Asked how to maintain that form, the manager said: “It’s about being relentless now, that is what football is really, especially in the EFL. 46 games of really hard work and it can be a slog but if you’re successful, it can be really worth it. We’re just going to keep fighting every day and every game.”
On the injury front, Luton will have Jordan Clark and Tom Lockyer available for selection, but Luke Freeman faces weeks on the sidelines after undergoing a groin operation.
