Tom Holmes has joined Belgian Pro League side FCV Dender EH on loan for the rest of the campaign with Luton needing to trim their squad after a bumper spending spree in the January transfer window.

The centre half was signed from his boyhood club Reading a year ago, but immediately loaned back to the Royals for the remainder of last season.

Holmes linked up with the Hatters in the summer and made his bow in the Championship stalemate at Portsmouth in August and has since made 20 appearances.

But, the 24-year-old didn’t feature in the squad at the weekend as Town drew 1-1 at Sheffield Wednesday, to win their first away point since September.

Town have made welcomed eight new players to Kenilworth Road during this transfer window, including re-signing former player of the year Kal Naismith, who would play in Holmes’ position.

With the signing of Norwegian striker Lasse Nordås, it took Town’s squad beyond the 25-men allowed and Holmes follows club legend Pelly-Ruddock Mpanzu out the exit door tonight after the midfielder moved to Rotherham United on loan. Forward Cauley Woodrow has also left on loan to join Blackburn Rovers.

Manager Matt Bloomfield told the club’s website: “There’s a lot of competition now at centre-half with Kal coming in, and I think Mads Andersen and Mark McGuinness have done well in the last couple of games.

“We hope to have Reece Burke fit and competing at some point as well, so we have a lot of options in that area.

“We need to register 25 players and we’ve got a big squad, so it’s about making sure that the numbers are right.

“Tom did really well in the first couple of games but found himself out of the team again, but this is a really exciting opportunity to go and play some football in Belgium and we all hope he does well out there.”
