Harry Cornick says he’s got to keep hitting the net in order to preserve his place in the team, after he bagged a goal for the second successive Saturday in the 3-1 win over Barnsley.

The forward fired in Town’s third in the 31st minute after his side had ripped through a shell-shocked Tykes team.

His 12-yard blast added to the towering header Cornick converted last week against West Brom to open his account in the Championship, but unlike then, Luton held on to their lead to register their first league win of the campaign.

“I’ve got to keep scoring to stay in the team, really,” said the former Bournemouth ace, adding: “We’ve got strikers on the bench which can come in and keep us on our toes. I’m delighted for me, but the main thing was the three points.

“We had to win to get the confidence, really. We’ve played well in previous games, but we haven’t got the results, so it’s nice to put two and two together and get the win.”

The goal puts Cornick level with James Collins on two strikes apiece this season so far, with the latter bundling in the second soon after Jacob Butterfield blasted an 82nd second opener.

“It’s what he does so well,” Cornick said of last term’s top scorer, adding: “He’s always there and when you need someone to bundle it over the line he’s always there. It’s good for me to score and get two, and he’s got two now as well so it’s healthy competition to keep us going.”

On his strike, the forward said: “It has dropped nice and Sonny (Bradley) said before the corner, ‘they’re not winning the headers here, so it could drop to you. It fell to me nicely, I hit the target and it went in. For me, I’m delighted to get another goal and keep my account going.”

Cornick and co were electric in the first period at Oakwell, with only Simon Radlinger in the Barnsley goal keeping the score down.

Tthe forward said: “We played really well, carved them open and created chances. We’ve got to be more clinical. I think we’ve got to take our chances and get four or five, rather than letting them come back into the game.

“At 3-1 they could grab another and then it’s backs against the wall, so we need to be more clinical and make sure we get the points.

“In previous weeks we’ve come out slow and this week we’ve come out a bit better but we weren’t as good in the second half as we were in the first half.

“We need to keep working on it because there’s going to be times when we’re not 3-0 up and we can’t rest on it. We need to start well.”
