Joe Taylor’s time at Luton was limited due to a crop of more established forwards at the club, chief executive Gary Sweet has explained after the goalscorer’s “too good for us to refuse” switch to Huddersfield.
The reported fee is in the region of £3million, though it’s officially recorded as undisclosed and comes after the 22-year-old almost made the move to the Terriers in the summer.
It is understood that a bid for Leicester striker Tom Cannon could not be agreed in the summer window, so Taylor remained at Kenilworth Road.
The striker, who signed from Peterborough United in 2023, and spent last term on loan at Lincoln and Colchester, made 13 appearance this season for Luton, but they all came from the bench.
His limited minutes came due to Luton having more experienced in his position, with Carlton Morris, Elijah Adebayo, Jacob Brown and Cauley Woodrow all above him in the Hatters’ pecking order.
Taylor finally completed the switch to Huddersfield last week, after manager Rob Edwards had left the club by mutual consent and before new man Matt Bloomfield was appointed yesterday.
While unveiling the new boss, CEO Sweet, said: “Regarding Joe. We were going to let Joe go out in the summer and, unfortunately for him, we didn’t quite land a deal on the last couple of days that meant we had to really keep him in the building, which was a pity for Joe at the time.
“He made his opinions known that he wanted to join Huddersfield and that offer was probably too good for us to refuse for Joe at that moment.
“I think his time here was a little bit limited. Not necessarily because he wasn’t preferred, but I think generally because we probably had better players ahead of him at the time for our team.
“We wish him all the best and he’s a good lad, and I hope they do well with him.”
Taylor told Huddersfield’s club website: “I’m delighted to finally get this one over the line. It’s been in the pipeline for a long time and I’m just thankful that this time we’ve been able to sign on the dotted line.
“I owe a lot of this move to Mark Cartwright – he’s been the one that’s been in regular contact with me and my team. He has been the one that’s been persistent in this, in making sure it does get over the line and I’m just very grateful that it has.
“I’m just here to try and score as many goals as possible and work as hard as I can to get this Club back where it belongs.
“Me and the gaffer have been in contact as much as we can over the period of time that Huddersfield Town have been interested. It’s really good to have had his support and advice along the way – I’m looking forward to getting going.
“Social media has been a bit crazy with this whole move, but the fans have been only supportive. They’ve been brilliant and it’s just made me want to get here even more. Hopefully, I can do the business for them.”
