Luton boss Graeme Jones has today confirmed that Danny Hylton has had an exploratory knee operation, but Martin Cranie’s knee injury may not be as bad as first thought.

Striker Hylton has not featured at all this season and last appeared for the Hatters on March 23, scoring in a 4-0 League One win over Doncaster.

He had been blighted by a knee injury but had returned to training only to suffer a setback.

Jones said: “Danny’s the hardest working pro you’ll ever meet in your life. He’s got desire coming out of his ears and sometimes it’s to his detriment. He pushes himself really, really hard.

“He’s had to have a clear-out today so we won’t be seeing Danny for a while, which is obviously a bit frustrating because Danny  gives you a level of commitment and quality. It’s been a bit of a setback.

“It’s the same knee, not the same problem, but sometimes you get complications. He had a good period of training, Danny, but his knee blew up and there’s obviously a reason for that so we’ve had to have an exploratory operation today to tidy one or two things up that we’ve seen on the scan. I don’t expect him to be too long, but it has been a setback.

“He can score goals, Danny,. He’s a grafter, he works his backside off. What I love about Danny is he’s totally committed to football, it’s his whole life. People like that, it’s very difficult to hold them back, but he is 30, Danny, and he has to train smart, rather than training hard all the time, you have to train smart as your body changes. Danny is in that category and we’re trying to find a formula that works for him.”

Defender Cranie was stretchered off at Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday night, and today Jones said: “He’s just been scanned so we don’t know it’s the truth but he’s got no swelling, which is a good sign, but you never know with these things will have to wait and see.”

“Potts was missing from the 1-0 defeat at Hillsborough on Tuesday and ahead of the Championship trip to Barnsley on Saturday, Jones said: “I think Dan be touch and go or just my name in the next 24/48 hours and hopefully we’ll be there.

“That’s football. We have to get on with it. People need to take the opportunity. I’m confident in the players we’ve got.”

Jones also confirmed that Luke Berry is back in training.
