Jack Wilshere is hopeful that the injury Ali Al-Hamadi suffered while on international duty is not a serious one as Luton aim to establish the extent of issue.
The striker was called called up by Iraq and he scored in their World Cup play-off qualifying play-off against the UAE in a 1-1 draw, but he was forced off and returned to England.
The 23-year-old had only just fought his way back to fitness after a long calf lay-off, having arrived on loan from Ipswich Town on transfer deadline day. He made his debut in the 4-3 FA Cup win over Forest Green earlier this month.
Al-Hamadi’s goal for Iraq on Thursday had looked like a springboard for a proper spell of games once he return to Kenilworth Road, but his withdrawal at half time immediately raised concern. Iraq’s national side confirmed on Friday that will miss next week’s second leg after injuring a “front muscle” during the match in Abu Dhabi.
Offering an update after Saturday’s League One draw with Rotherham, Luton boss Wilshere said: “I know he played, I know he scored, and I knew he’d come off with an injury. I’m still waiting for more information.
“I think it’s his quad, and I don’t think it’s a bad one, but we have to wait. I know he had a scan there. I think we’re waiting for the information back from their medical team, but we’ll get him back, he’ll come back and we’ll assess it as well.”
