Cameron Jerome believes he could play football until he’s 40, but says he’s only focused on enjoying this season with Luton.
The forward was awarded his first goal of the season, courtesy of the Dubious Goals Committee awarding him one that had originally being credited as an own goal to Jimmy Dunne, as Town Town beat QPR 3-1.
Jerome turned 36 in the summer and has had to make do with cameo appearances off the bench this season, averaging just 23 minutes a game.
Asked about his future, Jerome said: “You never say never in football. You just don’t know what’s around the corner.
“Physically, I feel really good. If I was to call it now, I’d say I could play until I’m 40, of course I could.
“I’m physically great, I’m athletically great, I’ve not lost any of my attributes and, obviously as you get older, you learn to adapt your game.
“To answer your question, I probably could play until I’m 40, yeah.”
He looked sharp against Rangers, and it was his pressing that forced the crucial second goal, which was eventually accredited to him.
Tonight he travels to his former club Norwich, where achieved promotion to the Premier League through the play-offs, scoring in the final against Middlesbrough.
After missing out on the final last term with Luton, promotion is once again the aim.
Jerome said: “I said in the summer to the manager that I’d give it my all again this year and then I’ll see where I’m at, whether it’s here or somewhere else, I don’t know.
“I do feel good. Injuries (are OK), god-willing, and we’ll just see where we are at the end of the season.
“Physically, I feel good, but whether I carry on or not is another thing.
“You get to a point as a footballer where you’ve just got to enjoy every day and I’m at that back end of the career where everything’s a bonus at the minute. In that sense, I’ll just take it as it comes.”
Jerome hasn’t been back to old club Norwich, since he left for Derby in 2018. His time at Carrow Road was arguably his most successful spell he made more than 130 appearances in three-and-a-half years, scoring 42 times.
He said: “t will be nice to see one or two familiar faces but it’s business as usual as far as I’m concerned.
“I had a really amazing time there and it was a special time in my career, but I’m focused on trying to get the three points with Luton.”
The Canaries, who were relegated from the Premier League last term are winless in three, but sit third in the Championship.
The Hatters could leapfrog them if they can win in Norfolk for the first time since their 2013 FA giant-killing, when Luton were a non-league club and City were top-flight.
Jerome said: “Norwich are Norwich, they’re very strong at this level. They’ve kept quite a lot of their squad, core members from the Premier League but it’s by no means an easy game.
“But this is the Championship. Every game is a winnable game and we’ll go into that full of belief.”
