Luton boss Rob Edwards called Thomas Kaminski’s sending off “mental” after a the goalkeeper was booked for time-wasting before getting his marching orders.
His sending off on 31 minutes, for hacking down two Portsmouth players, threatened to leave the Hatters pointless after two Championship games, but an impressive rearguard action for an hour saw them keep the score goalless to earn a point at Fratton Park.
But Edwards was dumbfounded at the first yellow card for Kaminski and questioned why referee John Busby would think his men were time-wasting.
“I have to talk about the sending off. I think it’s mental,” Edwards told the club’s website.
“I’m asking them to play a certain way and I’m asking Teden to wait on the ball, have a look and assess what we’re doing.
“We want to try to build and try to make two or three short passes to them on to us so we can get behind them, and then go and speed the game up. We saw some really good examples of that.
“We’re not wasting time. I’m not trying to waste time. Why would I do that in the first half? And if you’re going to book anyone I don’t know why they’ve not booked Teden, who was waiting on the ball. I’m asking him to, by the way. It’s crazy.
“Then the second one (yellow card), I’m not complaining about, but then we’re having to shuffle about and it becomes a really difficult afternoon for us.
“But it gives the lads some belief, a good performance.”
