Liam Walsh has apologised to Luton fans after his second red card of the season and vowed to atone for his errors.

The midfielder signed on a free in the summer after being released by Swansea where he had lengthy injury problems.

The 27-year-old has only made ten appearances for the Hatters but he has twice lunged into dangerous tackles after coming on as a substitute and been dismissed.

His first sending off came just 36 seconds after his introduction against Oxford United, which saw him suspended for three games.

Then, after an injury which kept Walsh out for three weeks, on his return, he was adjudged to have recklessly challenged Yuki Ohashi of Blackburn Rovers.

After being given his marching orders, angry Town captain Carlton Morris twice shoved Walsh and then bump into his team-mate as he walked from the pitch at Ewood Park

The red card offence also saw the former Everton youth slapped with a four-game ban, while Luton CEO Gary Sweet confirmed in his last match-day programme notes that for his “mind-boggling actions” the Liverpudlian will be hit in the wallet with the “maximum fine permissible for letting down our visiting supporters, staff and his team-mates”.

Now, in a statement via Luton’s social media accounts, Walsh, who won’t be available for selection again until January 6, has apologised for his actions.

He said: “Firstly, I just want to say that since the first day I walked into this special club, I’ve had nothing but positive support rom the fans, staff and players.

“As a football fan myself I understand how much I’ve let you down and I own up to that, there is no excuse. I have made not one but two mistakes now that I know myself are not good enough and not upon to the standards expected as a professional.

“I’ve had a week or so to think how I can make it up to the fans of this great football club, because Luton Town is a club I want to be at and succeed at. I will be working hard now to stay as fit as possible so I am ready to come back to the pitch to help the boys, and also showcase to you fans how much you mean to me.

“I know a lot of people won’t take my apology well and rightly so, but I look forward to playing in front of you Hatters again, backing up my words and help this club go on to success.”
