Ipswich close to £8m deal for Ogbene, say reports

Luton’s Chiedozie Ogbene is reportedly close to an initial £8million switch to Ipswich Town.

The 27-year-old joined the Hatters last summer as a free agent, having been at Rotherham United and played 33 times in the Premier League, scoring four times and at one point being clocked as the fastest player in the top-flight.

But Luton were relegated back to the Championship after just one season and Ogbene started at the weekend as the Hatters lost 1-0 at Preston North End.

But he has been heavily linked with a return to the Premier League with new boys Ipswich, with reports suggesting the Republic or Ireland international is in advanced talks with the Tractor Boys.

The Suffolk side have been splashing the cash this summer in their bid to do what Luton could not and avoid immediate relegation back to the second tier.

And their spending has already dwarfed the £20million Luton spent in the region of last year, with almost £100million spent on Blackburn’s Sammie Szmodics, Sunderland’s winger Jack Clarke, plus Dara O’Shea from Burnley, Liam Delap, Jacob Greaves, Omari Hutchinson, Ben Johnson, Arijanet Muric and Connor Townsend.
