Luton boxer Sam King avenged a draw and freak injury that he said had been eating him up when he cruised to victory in a rematch against Artjom Spatar at York Hall on Saturday.
The middleweight took a clean sweet of all six rounds to beat the Estonian 60 points to 54, 13 months after his fledgling professional career suffered a setback against the same opponent when he broke both his hands in their first clash, but bravely battled on to avoid a first defeat.
King returned to the ring six months later to beat Dmitri Protkunas and, earlier this year, he dispatched Remi Scholer, but he was offered a rematch against Spatar at short notice on Saturday, where he was able set the record straight.
“I broke both hands in one fight, so this was a little bit of, not pressure, but it was just eating me up for about a year,” he said in his Box Nation interview, ringside after the victory.
“I knew I was way better than the performance that I drew and I showed that tonight by winning every round.
“I am happy. I wanted to get a stoppage but what I’ve learnt from even the draw is that it doesn’t matter, it’s just about winning.
“They’re tough boys in there. It’s tough and he got through some good work, so fair play to him. I’m just happy I won and a won every round.”
King, who trains out of the legendary Peacock Gym and is backed by Frank Warren’s Queensberry Promotions, is now keen to get back in the ring as quickly as possible.
“I took that on two-and-a-half weeks’ notice so I’m ready to go any time. As soon as I can get back out, I’m back out,” he said. “I always bring a good crowd. Two-and-a-half weeks’ notice there’s 100 of us here. I’m ready to do it all again.
After the fight, King posted on his Instagram account: ‘This time last year I managed to bite down and get through a fight, breaking both of my hands, coming away with a draw.
‘We had the call to get the rematch 2.5 weeks ago and of course we jumped at it.
‘Last night was one that meant that little bit more to me on this incredible journey. Rewriting that and coming away with an exceptional win, winning every round in style.
‘A massive thank you to everyone who made the effort to come down, watch from home and support me at such short notice’.
